42 in the hole for 51 |
Description: |
Local #42 is in the siding at Carroll for Pig Train #51. Carroll is not actually a town, just the name of a siding in the middle of no where between Winona and Vaiden. #42 was a local that ran from Canton, MS to Jackson, TN. #51 was a Chicago to New Orleans piggyback. #51 was running in 2 sections this day and this is the 1st section. This job was allocated to a GM&O crew from the former GM&O Tennessee Division. The 2nd section had a Grenada/Water Valley District Crew. The siding at Carroll was 2,423 ft. long. 80 car train |
Description: |
The CN leased us this engine for one day because we had 80 storage cars at Aberdeen JCT to be picked up to take to Kosciusko. It would have taken about 8 trips in our 45-tonner to move this many cars. Shortly after this picture, we stalled on the hill leaving Mc Adams and had to double our train into Kosciusko. This was the longest train we ever had on the KSRY. Engineer Robert Riley, Conductor Dave Dellatte, Brakemen Joe Marascalco and Merrill Porter. |

last day for the evening switcher |
Description: |
After over a decade of trying, Hunter Harrison was finally able to pass his hourly agreement with train crews and things would be harder for the effected employees from here on out. No more 8 hour work days, work rules, or brakemen on every switching job. Hunter even managed to get rid of old agreements requiring a certain number of assignments at each terminal. Grenada went from having 4 jobs to 3 when the contract went into effect and this was the last day that the evening switcher was on. Some employees that worked out of Grenada and Water Valley for over 30 years had to find work at other locations. Pictured is brakeman Fred Goff and Engineer Willie Pullen. |
